Being Heard Hearing

In “Being Heard Hearing”, there is a comfort in having the different ways we hear, be heard. There is a retaliation against the role of object, as disability takes its space as subject and dances, unhindered and uninhibited before the other. This work places being different before the spectator as the interpreter is immersed in the essence of the hard of hearing dancer.

Created in contemplation of disability and intent on the expression of disability, this work desires to highlight and celebrate the ways in which difference —in all of its appealing abnormalities— can offer a complexity of interpretation as a different use of the senses inspires a different use of the body. The human vessel is an alterable and altering machine that is responsible for many ways that we can be different in the world, one of which is the way we can be heard hearing.
